Neil Young in Concert: 1990-1999

Neil Young and Crazyhorse-- The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA-- 11-13-90
Whenever someone starts claiming that something is "the best," one must realize that a certain degree of subjectivity is taking place. With that in mind, I must say that this might very well be the best Neil Young show that ever happened, and, at the very least, it serves a prime example of how exciting it is to listen to Neil and Crazyhorse interact with one another. Neil plays "Dangerbird" live for the first time-- as well as a delicious feedback-saturated run through "T-Bone" (only time played) and the seldom-played "Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze." This show is simply Neil at his best. Solo after solo after solo makes each song extra special. The show also features several tunes from the Ragged Glory album. Neil and Crazy Horse subsequently toured the United States starting in early 1991. There are several bootleg discs of this show under a variety of different names. The discs are sourced from an excellent dat audience recording from this memorable evening.

Country Home / Surfer Joe And Moe The Sleaze / Love To Burn / Days That Used To Be / Bite The Bullet/ Cinnamon Girl / Farmer John / Cowgirl In The Sand / Over And Over Again / Danger Bird / Don't Cry No Tears / Sedan Delivery / Roll Another Number / Fucking Up / T-Bone / Homegrown / Mansion On The Hill / Like A Hurricane / Love And Only Love / Cortez The Killer

Neil Young & Crazyhorse-- Cow Palace, San Francisco, CA-- 4-6-91
Neil did not vary the set much at all on this tour-- and, to be honest, if you own the Weld release you have the best chronicle of this tour available. Yet-- since I was at this show I feel inclined to mention it. I am still having trouble hearing after this one! Neil set the standard for the hardness of his electric music on this tour. I will never forget the facial expressions on the couple I had been talking to before the show. They had come to the concert hoping to hear stuff like "Old Man" and "Heart of Gold." They had no idea Neil was going to unleash a wall of noise as overwhelming and earth-shaking as a volcanic explosion. I would have talked to them after the show-- but I had unfortunately lost my ability to hear!

My, My, Hey, Hey / Crime In The City / Blowin' In The Wind / Love To Burn / Cinnamon Girl / Mansion On The Hill / Fuckin' Up / Cortez The Killer / Powderfinger / Love And Only Love / Rockin' In The Free World / Like A Hurricane / Roll Another Number

Neil Young (solo acoustic)-- Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, CA-- 9-22-92
A great, great acoustic set. Neil does a wonderful pairing of "The Needle and the Damage Done" with "Tonight's the Night" followed by "Speaking Out" and "Roll Another Number--" as well as a most of the Harvest Moon album.

Comes A Time / Cinnamon Girl / Cowgirl In The Sand / From Hank To Hendrix / Unknown Legend / Dance, Dance, Dance/ Love Is A Rose / Pocahontas / Like A Hurricane / War Of Man / Old King (with hilarious story about Elvis) / Heart Of Gold / Such A Woman / The Needle And The Damage Done / Tonight's The Night / Speaking Out / Roll Another Number / Harvest Moon / Old Man / Powderfinger / Don't Let It Bring You Down / Sugar Mountain / Mr. Soul / After The Goldrush

Neil Young w/ Booker T and the MG's
Warfield Theatre, San Francisco, CA-- 6-10-93

I was at this show, and the night before, and it stands out as one of the finest times I have seen him play. Booker T and the MG's are a much different kind of back-up band than Crazyhorse. They are much tighter, and while the set does not have the same loosness as the Crazyhorse sets, Neil plays much tighter as a result. Lots of great tunes too. The song selection was wonderful too. Check out Neil's backup singers on "Motorcycle Mama" from the Comes A Time release. "I Believe in You" is delivered with Neil on the piano and the soulful licks of Steve Cropper. I have no complaints about the show whatsoever-- but I kept hoping that Neil might play some Booker T songs, and, while Neil does sing Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay" [Booker T. & the MG's were the backup band on the original Otis tune], I was hoping he might lend his guitar talents to "Green Onions" or any other great instrumental from the Booker T catalog. Still-- check out Neil's wirey guitar solos on "Southern Man" and "Down By the River." The tape also offers a couple of new Neil tunes, that still have not made it to any studio releases-- "Live to Ride" and "Seperate Ways." [NOTE: Later on in this tour, Neil started to play "Change Your Mind," which would eventually develop into a fifteen minute plus jam tune.]

Mr Soul / The Loner / Southern Man / Helpless / This Note's For You / Motorcycle Mama / Like A Hurricane / I Believe In You / Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere / Love To Burn / Seperate Ways / Powderfinger / Only Love Can Break Your Heart / Harvest Moon / Live To Ride / Down By The River / Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay / All Along The Watchtower

Neil Young and Crazyhorse-- Hamilton Warren Amphitheatre, Sedona, AZ 10-22-94
One of the few shows where Neil does the Sleeps With Angels material live. The "Change Your Mind" is fantastic, and Neil also turns in a nice reading of "My Heart."

Feedback / My Heart / Prime Of Life / Drive By / Sleeps With Angels / Hey, Hey, My, My / Cortez The Killer / Train Of Love / Change Your Mind / Piece Of Crap / Helpless

Neil Young w/ Pearl Jam
Royal Society Showgrounds- Dublin, Ireland-- 8-26-95

Seeing as many think of Neil young as the godfather of grunge, it was only fitting that Neil team up with grunge's sparkly-eyed wonders-- Pearl Jam. The truth of the matter is-- they provide some very solid back up to the Mirror Ball material that they collaborated on in the studio-- and also offer a heavy edge to some Neil classics like "Mr Soul" and "Cortez the Killer."

Big Green Country / Song X / Act Of Love / Downtown / Mr. Soul / Scenery / Comes A Time / The Needle And The Damage Done / Don't Let It Bring You Down / Mother Earth / Throw Your Hatred Down / Cortez The Killer / Powderfinger / Rockin' In The Free World / Like A Hurricane

Neil Young & Crazyhorse
Old Princeton Landing, Princeton-By-The-Sea, CA April, May & June 1996

Neil Young played a few weeks worth of shows at this tiny bar located on the coast of Northern California-- not more than a half hour drive from San Francisco. Rather than choose a best show from this run-- there were so many highlights-- I have created a separate page to cover these often extraordinary performances. Click here to read more.

Neil Young & Crazyhorse
Cal Expo Amphitheatre, Sacramento, CA-- 9-16-96

I really should have put the extra effort forth and driven up to see this show. I went to see the show at the Concord Pavillion the following night. And, while it was a really good show, it did not have the same manic energy as this evening up in Sacramento. Listen to the blistering solos on "Dangerbird" from the Zuma release. "Big Time" crackles with energy and the electric version of the usually peaceful and sublime "Pocahontas" is transformed into a rocking tune. "Tonight's the Night" is also particulalry blistering.

Hey Hey, My My / Pocahontas / Big Time / Slip Away / The Needle And The Damage Done / Comes A TIme / Heart Of Gold / Changing Highways / Sugar Mountain / Cinnamon Girl / Fuckin' Up / Cortez The Killer / Music Arcade / Like A Hurricane // Sedan Delivery / Roll Another Number / Dangerbird / Rockin' In The Free World / Tonight's The Night

Neil Young & Crazyhorse
The Trocadero, San Francisco, CA-- 5-8-97

This is the kind of show that people who love to talk/brag about their rock and roll concert-going experiences love! Neil left the San Francisco Film Festival's screening of the Jim Jarmusch documentary about Neil's 1996 tour-- Year of the Horse-- and wandered down to the Trocadero-- a punk club in San Francsco's SOMA district. He was joined by Crazyhorse for a smoking two-set evening of music. Neil offered a very eclectic sampling of new and old and a few from the middle. The highlight has got to the second version of "Razor Love." Neil's vocals are as fragile as a songbird on this one-- and naturally Neil's guitar playing is up to par all evening.

Hard Luck Stories / I'm The Ocean / Razor Love / Crime In The City / Truth Be Known / Piece Of Crap / Don't Be Denied / Throw Your Hatred Down / Downtown / Hippie Dream / Mellow My Mind / Rockin' In The Free World // Hey, Hey, My, My / Slip Away / Big Time / The Losing End / Sedan Delivery / Throw Your Hatred Down / Razor Love / Cowgirl In The Sand / Prisoner's Of Rock & Roll

Neil Young (solo acoustic)-- The Paramount, Oakland, CA-- 3-20-99
Neil's 1999 acoustic tour brought new meaning to the term "intimate acoustic evening." The stage, as usual for Neil's acoustic tour, was seemingly littered with instruments-- ranging from a variety of guitars (12 string and six string), a banjo, a pump organ and a piano. Candles illuminated the stage and the whole setting gave the distinct feel you were hanging out in a living room. The set list for the tour offered some very nice chestnuts, including the seldom-played "Ambulance Blues--" a perreniel favorite from one of Neil's best records, On the Beach, and a sampling of new songs. This show in particular stands out as one of the finest evenings of the whole tour. "Southern Pacific" is played on the banjo, giving it a clunky sound similar to a train rolling down the track. The Rust List put together a five disc compilation from this tour that is well worth tracking down.

On The Way Home / Looking Forward / Goin' Back / Out Of Control / Cortez The Killer / Don't Let It You Bring You Down/ Mother Earth/ Homegrown/ Silver And Gold / Daddy Went Walkin'// Distant Camera / Ambulance Blues / Southern Pacific / Old Man / Horseshoe Man / Kansas / Harvest Moon / Slowpoke / Long May You Run // Good To See You / From Hank To Hendrix / Down By The River

Neil Young (solo acoustic)-- The Rosemont Horizon, Chicago, IL-- 5-1-99
If for no other reason, this show is a must have because Neil plays his classic "bummer tune of all time"-- "On the Beach." Other highlights are "Look Out for My Love," "Razor Love," and "Expecting to Fly." The whole tour is quite good and frankly you can't go wrong with any tape from any night of this tour.

Look Out For My Love / Looking Forward / War Of Man / Out Of Control / Lotta Love / Don't Let It Bring You Down / Expecting To Fly / Philadelphia / Dance Dance Dance / Daddy Went Walkin' // Distant Camera / Razor Love / Southern Pacific / Old Man / Horseshoe Man / Long May You Run / Harvest Moon / Slowpoke / After The Goldrush // Good To See You / Pocahontas / On The Beach / Sugar Mountain
