The Music Archive's Favorite Bands/Artists
- The Band
Throughout the years, The Band have mixed their folk roots with rock and roll better than any other band. Their career through the Sixties and Seventies provided some incredible records and several amazing tours, including the critically acclaimed tour with Dylan in 1974, all of which came to a climatic end at The Last Waltz show Thanksgiving 1976. They have also gotten back together in several configurations over the years since the initial breakup-- but none of these configurations were with Robbie (who remains a solo artist). I am only recommending one link because there is no better. This site is simply amazing!
- The Band (The Unofficial Site)
This fantastic site includes a discography, list of bootlegs, loads of photos, and information on the joining The Band discussion list. Not only can you read about The Band, but there is tons of information on everyone who has workedwiththem as a band and in the members various solo acts. Simply one of the best music sites on the web. Don't miss this site!
- Luka Bloom
Luka, traditional Irish musician Christy Moore's brother, has discovered a very unque sound of its own that is a bit difficult to place in any particular category. If you aren't familiar with his music-- go to a cd store as soon as possible and discover his music for yourself.
- J. J. Cale
Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) owe a lot of what they know about playing guitar to J.J. Cale. J. J. is the smoothest guitar player I know of. His approach to soloing is to hit the right notes, the sweet notes-- no need to weigh down a solo with a lot of extra notes for the sake of speed. J.J. does not have much of a presence on the web, but there are a few sites worth checking out.
-
The Official J. J. Cale Page
You will find pictures, audio clips, reviews, and tour information at the official site! There is a pretty cool video you can watch too.
- An Unofficial J. J. Cale Page
Discography, a few photos, some commentary, a few reminsences. Very much a fan-based site. Worth checking out-- especially since there are not very many Cale websites out there.
- Guy Clark
Fans of Townes Van Zandt have likely heard of Guy, but Guy is another of many great musicians who has never found the widespread praise that he deserves. Guy is another one, among many, of those great songwriters that hail from the Lone Star State of Texas.
- Bruce Cockburn
Bruce is, unfortunately, one of the music world's best kept secrets. He is a gifted songwriter and guitarist, an outspoken liberal Christian, and a political activist. Wrap all of these up and blend them together with the melodies and arrangements of folk, jazz, blues, and good old rock and roll and you have Bruce's music. There are several good pages out there.
- Ry Cooder
THE and I mean THEEEEEE master of slide guitar. Lately, Ry has been spending most of his time in the World Beat area of music, but previous to his work with The Buena Vista Social Club Ry was an R&B master and a folkie. Not only does he play a mean slide, but Ry also plays the mandolin quite well. Our quest for Ry Cooder links revealed that there is not much out there, but we did manage to find a few interesting sites-- including a Little Village page!!!
- The Rylanders Homepage
Good discography. Home of the Ry Cooder mailing list.
- Little Village Page
Bands like this don't come around very often (and not often enough). Little Village was formed by Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, and Jim Keltner. They released one record and embarked on a short tour across the US. What a band! This web site offers you the chance to reminisce if you remember-- or discover what you missed.
- Elvis Costello
Elvis has dabbled in a lot of different genres-- punk, country, classical and rock and roll. We here at the Music Archive have enjoyed it all.
- Bob Dylan
What does one say about Bob Dylan? I think his career speaks for itself. Looking for Bob Dylan sites on the net is a bit overwhelming-- there are so many! Here are a couple of suggestions.
- The Official Bob Dylan Site
This is one of the better official artist sites out there. Some concert clips are available for your listening pleasure amongst other features.
- Bill Pagel's Bob Links Page
Bill Pagel's web site is the definitive Dylan site. There is so much information here (including up to the minute reviews and setlists of Dylan's never ending tour). This site is an excellent starting point for any questions you might need answered. There is also a definitve listing of Bob Dylan links on the site. Truly one of the better music web sites out there!
- Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia/Etc.
For links to other Grateful Dead sites, check out The Music Archive's Grateful Dead Links Page.
- David Grisman
David Grisman has certainly blazed a path of his own in the world of acoustic music. Certainly one of the greatest mandolin players of our time, David fuses jazz, bluegrass, folk, blues, and rock and roll into his unique Dawg sound. David, in an effort to produce recording sonically perfect acoustic recordings, has started his own label Acoustic Disc. This label has released a lot of wonderful recordings that are all well worth checking out!
- Acoustic Disc
Be sure you check this site out! Photos, sound clips, tour dates, and the chance to buy Acoustic Disc recordings awaits you! Some of my favorite CD's were released by this label.
- Steve Kimock (And all of His Variations)
Our webmaster first saw Kimock play with Zero back in 1985 at the Cotati Cabaret. Kimock blasted out a flurry of amazing guitar runs to an audience of about 50 people. Ever since that show, our faithful webmaster has been keeping track of this stunning guitar player, who has played with Zero, KVHW, The Other Ones, and Phil and Friends-- as well as a variety of Steve Kimock and Friends configurations. Kimock's guitar playing is so impassioned and melodic that one feels trapped in a storm at times. Few guitar players are able to put so much emotion into their playing.
- Official Steve Kimock Site
Official page from Steve Kimock's people. You can keep track of what configuration he is playing with next from this page. There are some sound clips and photos also-- as well as the opportunity to purchase some Kimock merchandise.
- Mark Knopfler (Dires Straits, Notting Hillbillies)
Mark Knopfler, mastermind behind the great band Dire Straits, has been producing and playing wonderful music since the late Seventies. His guitar work-- heavly influenced by great guitar players like J J Cale and Chet Atkins-- is as fluid and liquid as guitar playing gets, His solo work, including his stint with The Notting Hillbillies, is every bit as intriguing and satisfying as anything he did with Dire Straits.
- Official Mark Knopfler News
Official page from Knopfler's management. Good place to check for any upcoming tour dates.
- Neck and Neck
Great site with lots of info on Mark's official and unofficial releases.
- Mark Knopfler (Unofficial Homepage)
Great site with lots of interesting photos (some borrowed with permission from our gallery) and information.
- Money For Nothing
A great Dire Straits page with a little bit of Notting Hillbillies and other Knopfler solo projects tossed in for good measure.
- Van Morrison
For links to other Van Morrison sites, check out our Van Morrison Links Page.
- Richard Thompson
Richard Thompson is one of the most original guitarists and songwriters that we have heard over here at The Music Archive. His electric guitar playing is mind-numbing, filled with disonant twists down scales that don't belong to the melody yet do. Since his days with Fairport Convention, Thompson has consistently been contributing wonderful records and concerts to the world of music.
- Tony Joe White
America has most unfortunately forgotten about this swamp boogie king from The South. His popularity in Europe and Australia continues to grow, however. Joe White is best known for his hit "Polk Salad Annie," but his swamp sound, a mixture of r&b, blues, & soul, works well with all of his music. If you don't know who Tony Joe White is-- you must rectify this problem right away!
- Neil Young
For links to other Neil Young sites, check out our Neil Young Links Page.
